How to Prepare Your iPhone Before Selling or Trading In

Are you thinking of trading your iPhone? Before selling or trading your device, transferring your files to the new one, then removing your personal data from your old device is a must. Do not delete your contacts, calendars, reminders, documents, photos, or any other iCloud information while you are signed in to iCloud with your Apple ID. 

These are some steps to import information, then remove your personal information from your old device before selling your phone:

Transferring information to your new device

If you are using iOS 11 or later for iPhone, you can use Quick Start to automatically transfer information from your old phone to your new phone. If you are using iOS 10 or earlier, use iCloud, iTunes, or the Finder to transfer information to your new device.

Add additional trusted phone numbers to your account, if your phone number will change with your new device to ensure you do not lose access. You can generate a two-factor authentication code on your old device if you no longer have access to your old number.

Remove your personal information from your old device if you still have your phone.

  1. Unpair your Apple watch if you ever paired it with your iPhone.
  2. Back up your device.
  3. Sign out to all accounts like iCloud and the iTunes and App Store.
  4. Deregister iMessage if you’re switching to a non-Apple phone.
  5. Erase all contacts and settings in your iPhone.
  6. If it asks for your device passcode or Restrictions Passcode, enter your passcode then tap Erase.
  7. You can contact your carrier for help transferring service to the new owner.
  8. Before you turn your phone to the new owner, make sure to remove it from your trusted devices.

If you no longer have your iPhone, these steps may help you.

  1. You can ask the new owner to remove all content and settings using the steps above.
  2. In case you’re using iCloud and Find My Device, you can click this link, and sign in to the Find My app on another device. Choose the device, then click Erase. After that, click Remove from Account.
  3. Change your Apple ID password if you can’t follow either of the steps above. It prevents the new owner from deleting your information from iCloud. However, it won’t erase the personal information that is stored on your old phone.
  4. If ever you are no longer using an Apple phone, deregister iMessage.
  5. You can remove your debit or credit cards at if you are using Apple Pay. To see which devices are using Apple Pay, choose Account settings. Then click the device and click remove.
  6. Also, make sure to remove your old phone from your trusted devices.

If you’re trading in an Android phone to Apple.

  1. Make sure to back up your data so that you can restore it to your new phone.
  2. Erase the device from your trusted devices.
  3. Take out any SIM cards, memory cards, cases, and screen protectors.
